Chris Arreola was involved in a record-breaking defeat to Adam Kownacki back in 2019.

Arreola has stepped in the ring with some of the heavyweight division's most prominent names during the current era, including Andy Ruiz Jr, Vitali Klitschko and most famously Deontay Wilder.

Although being involved in some punishing wars, none came more brutal than his 2019 showdown with Kownacki.

The pair met in a huge clash at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, and served up a treat for fans in the arena.

Both fighters were known for not holding back at any point in their career and so it proved from the opening bell.

Arreola was outclassed for large periods of the bout, but the exchanges were relentless and both fighters absorbed some thumping shots.

The American even suffered a broken hand injury as the midway point approached, but it didn't slow up his remarkable work rate as he looked to close the gap.

It was an action-packed duel which despite the phenomenal output and volume of shots, he never looked close to comping to a halt before the final bell.

The contest went to the judges' scorecards and it was Kownacki who got the nod with officials scoring it at 117-111, 177-111 and 118-110 in the Polish fighter's favour.

It was the first time in the eventual winner's career that he had fought beyond ten rounds, and he'd made a serious statement in a tough outing.

But having both caught the eye, the stats showed exactly how much the pair had put into the contest.

The pair threw a combined 2,172 punches between them, with Arreola throwing 1125 of them which was the most recorded in Compubox's 34-year history.

Records continued to tumble, with a total of 667 punches being landed; the most in recorded heavyweight statistical history.

Kownacki landed 369 of his 1,047 total shots [35 per cent] while Arreola impressively landed 298 of 1,125 [27 per cent] of his total punches.

After the fight the pair embraced in what was a heartwarming exchange of respect given the aggressive come-forward nature of their collision.

And they broke down the fight with Arreola telling reporters: "Relentless. He just keeps coming.

"I cracked him with some good punches, he got me with some good punches, but he’s just a relentless fighter.

"Congratulations to Kownacki because he came in here and he won the fight.”

Kownacki added: "I thought it was a good fight.Chris is an Aztec warrior.

"Mexico’s a great nation, they have great fighters. It was a tough 12 rounds.

"I proved by the CompuBox numbers I was ready to go 12 rounds.”

It was a brutal war but it wasn't an unfamiliar tale for 'The Nightmare', who had gone toe-to-toe with some of the division's best talents.

This includes notorious power-puncher Wilder, who he had fought three fights prior in a WBC title challenge.

But in his 2016 outing he succumbed to the thunderous power of the 'Bronze Bomber' who first dropped him in round four.

After receiving some tough punishment, Arreola was forced to retire in the eighth round and failed to cause a huge upset at world level.

Despite threatening to hang up his gloves for good after defeat to Kownacki, he continued fighting, losing to Ruiz in 2022 before beating Matthew McKinney in 2023.

Following the heights of his win over Arreola, the Kownacki's career took a downwards trajectory as he suffered back-to-back defeats against Robert Helenius.

These results came as a major shock as the previously unbeaten heavyweight slugger's career unravelled in front of the world.

He has since suffered two defeats and a no-contest, with his plans to campaign at world level appearing to be over.

Kownacki first attempted to bounce back against Ali Eren Demirezen, but was outpointed over ten rounds.

He was then stopped by gatekeeper Joe Cusumano, though this fight was overturned to a no-contest due to Cusumano testing positive for a banned substance.

In March of this year, Kownacki made yet another comeback attempt, but lost by first-round knockout to Kacper Meyna in Poland.

His last win was the Arreola fight in 2019, with the thrilling affair seemingly having taken too much out of him and spelling the downfall he's sadly suffered since.
