I’m the most successful female cyclist in Olympic history but there’s one surprising sport I can’t wait for at Paris 2024

Sir Jason and Dame Laura Kenny will forever be remembered as Britain's golden couple when it comes to Olympic achievements.

The legendary athletes dominated track cycling during their decorated careers, becoming the most successful male and female British Olympians in the process, with a combined 15 Games medals.

Since both announcing their retirement from the sport, the pair have thrown themselves into new ventures.

And the time away from competing has opened up opportunities to explore other sporting passions, as Laura revealed her excitement at turning spectator for one particular event at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

When asked if she would be drawn to any other disciplines in July, the first Games since Athens 2004 not to feature either of the power couple, there was one that immediately jumped out.

Speaking to talkSPORT.com, in collaboration with Team GB partners Whole Earth peanut butter, she said: “Actually, trampolining."

Explaining her enthusiasm for the sport, she continued: "Because Bryony Page obviously got a silver medal last time around.

“And our son Albie. So I used to love trampolining as a kid, and as soon as possible was like: ‘Albie, go on you try it!’

“So he’s six, and he also now loves it."

Despite this, cycling won't be far from her mind, as she prepares to begin work as a commentator, and with Jason acting as the Team GB men’s sprint coach in Paris, a role he took up immediately after retiring in 2022.

The 36-year-old revealed the transition from athlete to coach has been an enjoyable one, reflecting: “It’s been good, it's been a steep learning curve.

"I coach the lads, the team I was in effectively. So I went straight into coaching, into that. And it’s been mega, it's been really good."

The nine-time Games medallist then shared his excitement as he prepares to experience a different Olympic campaign to ones of the past.

He observed: “It’s very different, but in a way I think I enjoy events even more now.

“I get to soak them up a bit whereas as an athlete I never really did, because I was just worried so much about my own little job in it.

Jason added: “[I am] Really looking forward to my first Olympic experience not as an athlete, and going through that."

Since arriving on the scene in the 2008 and 2012 Games respectively, the pair's routine podium finishes have played a key role in Team GB topping cycling's medal tables in each of their last four Olympics.

But it was at the home Games of London 2012 where they captivated the nation, scooping two gold medals each as their romance and huge success on the track took centre stage.

And it is unsurprising that Laura named the event where she starred on her debut as a 20-year-old as the all-time high in her illustrious career.

Sharing her memories of the event, she said: “Everyone says ‘Oh your first Games is always going to be your best’.

"And my first Games just happened to be London 2012, so for me it just was the best."

She detailed the many moments which made that summer so special: “My first gold was the team pursuit, so I was with two of my closest friends [Joanna Rowsell and Dani King] at the time.

"And to stand on the podium with them knowing you’ve fully committed 18 months with each other, it just felt like no other.

"Just everything was surreal to me, I remember looking up and my mum and dad were sitting with Claire Balding doing an interview!"

Discussing other highlights from the home Games, she added: “And then Paul McCartney just starts singing Hey Jude!

"There were just so many things that added to that medal for me. That one is just really special.

“Plus you just never think it’s going to happen, I just never thought we were going to be Olympic champions.”

And it was not just the couple's huge success whilst competing which served up some surreal moments, as Jason admitted life in London's Olympic village also proved memorable.

He explained: “In London it was really special and we were right amongst it, it was really cool.

“You’d be walking to the food hall and I remember, I think Ryan Giggs was there, and you just see him passing in the street."

He added: “I remember being in the lift with Anthony Joshua, obviously who’s gone on to do big things after as well.

"So it’s really nice to look back on that and see where people have gone after it, 12 years on.”
